Garvies Point Museum & Preserve 5/17/2012

I hope you get some small idea of how much Violet loves to 'fish.'  Many of her favorite toys have been/are related to fishing, fish and whales.  Cliffton thought the fishing area of the museum was cool too.  At the end of the museum there is a kids area with fishing, planting, cooking, rope tying, and fake animal hides and more.  Its really quite neat.  The fishing ropes had a magnet at the end and luckily both magnets on the fish and on the 'fishing line' were strong and the kids were able to be successful fishermen.  Cliffton's favorite part was 'planting the seeds.'  The Museum is all about the history of the native americans in NY but also nationwide.  This was our first trip there.  Its on the north shore of the island and we live on the south shore so its about a 35 minute drive. 

They cooked up a nice meal for Mommy!  We had fun tossing the fish to each other.

These ants are huge!  You can see them from the window by the fishing canoe.  When you go outside to the trails down to the beach you can walk by the ants if you want, which we did.

The north shore was shaped by glaciers, morraine, etc. so its a much rockier and hillier shore than here on the south where we have some of the nicest beaches in the northeast (in terms of playing in the sand and more typical beach activities). I thought the north shore beaches were nice too but as you'll see...quite different from Jones Beach a few miles from our home.

I hate getting sand in my shoes!

I was surprised at how many hermit crabs we saw.  There were about 6 in this picture, maybe more.
